Welcome to the first FishSOOP newsletter of 2025! This edition highlights the latest developments in the program, including a case study of a scallop dredger using FishSOOP data to improve catch rates and updates on new installations in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Chief Investigator Prof. Moninya Roughan led a fieldwork mission in PNG, collaborating with local fisheries authorities to equip five tuna vessels with FishSOOP sensors. This initiative, supported by the Pacific Community (SPC), aims to enhance ocean monitoring across multiple regions.
Additionally, a recent case study showcases how a scallop dredger utilized temperature-at-depth data to locate nutrient-rich waters, leading to improved scallop quality and catch efficiency. The January data insights reveal significant temperature variations between the surface and deeper waters, reinforcing the importance of sub-surface data for fisheries. The FishSOOP team extends gratitude to all contributors for their support, emphasizing the program’s role in advancing ocean forecasting, climate research, and sustainable fishing practices.
